Renew your Instructor License

Motorcycle safety instructors must renew their license every 2 years. Start the process early to allow time for processing. Review your instructor qualifications and follow the steps below to renew your instructor license. 

Step 1Review the Texas Motorcycle Instructor Qualifications​

  • Have a valid motorcycle license in good standing for the last two years.
  • Have a good 3-year driving record, without being convicted of: 
  • Pass a background check.
    • Beginning August 1, 2025, you must be fingerprinted successfully pass a criminal history background check as part of your renewal requirement.
    • You will receive instructions for the fingerprint process when you submit your renewal application. Learn more about this change from TDLR news.
  • Provide criminal conviction information, if needed.

Step 2Review Curriculum Certification

  • Verify if First Aid/CPR training is required for your school(s)
  • Document classes taught for each school 
  • Follow curriculum renewal process
  • Obtain proof of renewed certification

Step 3Apply for Texas License Renewal

  • Create or login to the online licensing portal on the TDLR website​
  • Provide your new certification documentation to TDLR through the license renewal application.​
  • Pay the $50 application fee​
  • Renewal processing may take 4-6 weeks.
