About
Texas Rider Education is a statewide website developed by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute as part of an interagency cooperation contract with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to provide research, advocacy, and education services for the motorcycle operator training and safety program, as required by Senate Bill (S.B.) 616, 86th Legislature, Regular Session (2019), and stated by Texas Transportation Code, Chapter 662, Section 662.013.
The goal of the project and this website is to improve motorcyclist safety by reducing the number of motorcyclist crashes, injuries, and fatalities on Texas roadways through increasing participation in motorcyclist safety education, outreach, and training opportunities.
This website addresses one of the central ways in which the safety of motorcyclists can be improved is by taking at least the Entry Level Course (e.g., Basic Rider Course) and taking an intermediate and/or advanced riding course. However, as evidenced by the fact that nearly 50% of all motorcyclists killed in crashes on Texas roads do not have a motorcycle license (Class M)at the time of the crash, these motorcyclists likely did not take an Entry-Level (beginner or intermediate) Rider Course as required for motorcyclist licensure. In addition, relatively few motorcyclists take the intermediate or the advanced rider courses to improve or refresh their knowledge and skills.
This website also focuses on motorcyclist safety instructors who are needed to facilitate these courses for riders. Becoming a motorcyclist safety instructor can be a rewarding experience for riders who value safe riding habits and have a desire to help others to share in the riding experience for which they have a passion.
This website is designed to provide helpful and meaningful information to riders and future riders seeking courses and general safety information and for current motorcyclists who may be interested in becoming an instructor.
